José Jesus de Azevedo Souza studied in England at the Purcell School with a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. He then studied at the Trinity College of Music and the University of Sheffield. Since then he has given numerous solo, chamber and orchestral performances in Portugal, England, Thailand, the United States and Austria.

His music has been performed in the United States at the Composers’ Voice Concert Series, in the Philippines at the Pacific Soundstreams Festival, Portugal at the International Arts Festival, in Brunei at the ASEAN Music Camp, in Thailand at the Bangkok Contemporary Music Festival, in New Zealand at the Asia/Pacific Composers Conference & Festival, in Poland at the Tarnow Summer Concerts, in England at the Maidenhead Festival of Music & Dance, in Japan at the Japan Chamber Music Academy Anniversary Concerts, in Germany and the United States at the International Double Reed Society Conference, the Festival Internacional de Música Contemporânea in Brazil, Golden Key of Vienna in Austria, in addition to having been performed in concert in Denmark, France, Greece, Holland, Italy, Norway as well as having won the oboe category of the World Contest in Composition for Peace with his Por la Paz en El Mundo performed at the 70th Anniversary of the United Nations Organisation in London.
