12. Bullfrogs and Fireflies for flute and tuba, by Nathan Froebe (USA)

Bullfrogs and Fireflies was inspired by my 2023 residency at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. Located on a farm in the hills of Virginia, we were surrounded by vibrant nature. 19. LOVELY! for flute and tuba, by Jarmo Herkman (Finland)

I was inspired by this flute-tuba duo. I asked myself how on earth these two instruments can ever meet. My piece is melodic and romantic with some pastoral flavour but still contemporary.

Jarmo Herkman (born in 1964) studied musicology, piano pedagogy, music theory and composing. Furthermore, he also studied literature and aesthetics. He was a full-time musician till his thirties performing both chamber and solo music, teaching piano as well as music theory and history, and making arrangements and compositions. A few of his compositions were performed those times. However, his life situation made it impossible for him to continue full-time career as a musician and he started to study psychology and psychotherapy and has been working as a psychologist and a psychotherapist since twenty years, music as a side job. But as he has said, composing has been his passion since childhood. Three years ago, he was able to restart composing intensively. Year 2019 was busy for him: his compositions were performed several times in Finland and also abroad. He describes himself as an eclectic who likes to make music over boundaries, both contemporary classical as well as popular music.

20. Cavatina for flute and tuba, by Robert Herschbach (USA)

21. Divertimento for flute and tuba, by Robert Herschbach (USA)

Cavatina and Divertimento were written together, with the intention that these two short pieces provide a contrast to each other. My main interest in both pieces was in the pairing of two instruments with quite different attributes; I approached them almost as though they were characters or personalities-- retaining, I hope, their individuality while also bringing them together in a way that makes musical sense.

Robert Herschbach is a composer and poet based in central Maryland. He not infrequently draws musical inspiration from his four resident cats.

22. A Cup Of Coffee for flute and tuba, by Lisa Hogan (USA)

Two ex-partners, who are very close, meet for coffee. In the midst of conversation one partner realizes the other partner has a new paramour. Is the single partner jealous? No. Just envious of the former partner and wishing for their own new love.

She’s been featured in numerous concerts by Vox Novus 60x60 nationally and has composed for podcasts, and filmed for a documentary by Michael Johnson.

29. Working together for flute and tuba, by George Kontogiorgos (Greece/Canada)

The composition is a miniature for flute and tuba. In nature, diversity is self-evident and

accepted, while socially it remains controversial. The two instruments epitomize diversity.

run they seem to work harmoniously together.

31. The bear hunting for flute and tuba, by Maria Lazaridou (Greece)

Saint Valentine comprises seven parts that describe his life and philosophy. The work emphasizes the dual nature of St. Valentine's life through rhythm. One rhythm represents the saint's public life, while another rhythm reflects his private life. Despite the complex appearance of the work rhythmically, it only requires a slight difference in rhythm between the two hands.

Maria K. Lazaridou is a guitarist, composer, and music educator. Since 2023 she has been a PhD candidate in composition. 35. Polarization for piccolo and tuba, by Héctor Oltra García (Spain)

Polarization has a humanistic inspiration. We live in an increasingly uncertain and polarized world, socially and ideologically. The work, starring two of the most extreme instruments, plays with the concept of polarization applied not only to its registers, but also to the character, texture and timbre, developed through an outstanding use of contemporary extended techniques.

Héctor Oltra-García. Spanish composer (Alboraia, València). PhD of Music with cum laude distinction, Master in Contemporary Music and High Degrees in Composition and Orchestra Conducting. Professor of the Master's Degree in Composition at the International University of Valencia - VIU. 38. Dahkum for alto flute and tuba, by Jackson Poling (Canada)

“Dahkum” is a fictitious word that sounds similar to the short-long gestures in this piece. It can also be compared to a sneeze or exclamation! Both instruments battle to see who can de-escalate the intensity of the musical situation, which usually involves a decrescendo in volume.

Jackson Poling has been writing music since he was 13 years old, and has key interests in the genres of classical, rock, jazz, and pop. 41. Anticipation for flute and tuba, by David W. Pyke (Australia)

Anticipation is an uneasy but possibly hopeful state, that involves risk.  The unknown is interspersed with the known until a resolution is forthcoming.  Flutes and tubas complement in terms of almost opposing attributes.   One leads, one follows or they may travel tandem.  The key is defined upon their arrival.

David William Pyke is an Australian chamber and orchestral composer.  His works include Ballet of the Matryoshka Dolls, GBR Symphony and numerous chamber works including several works recorded by Dr Iwona Glinka. This piece ‘Anticipation’ was intriguing to him to juxtapose a flute with a tuba to tell a story.

42. 23 measures for a January sunset for alto flute and tuba, by Rafael de Rioja (Spain)

With this piece I create my own abstraction of a moment of a winter sunset. I try to evoke a soundscape in a single minute with simplicity and with elements of contemporary aesthetics.

Rafael de Rioja (1998) He finished his studies in Composition at the Conservatory of Music "Manuel Castillo" in Seville and he completes his training through courses and master classes with Cristóbal Halffter, Franck Bedrossian and J. Torres Maldonado, among others. A lover of art and especially poetry and painting, he uses them as inspiration in the development of his works, as well as the study of folklore and ancient music, marking an important factor in his music.

This piece is a temporary and artistic continuation of 23 measures for a January sunset. It is a progression of the soundscape between the sunset of that winter day and the nightfall.

Rafael de Rioja (1998) He finished his studies in Composition at the Conservatory of Music "Manuel Castillo" in Seville and he completes his training through courses and master classes with Cristóbal Halffter, Franck Bedrossian and J. 44. Ensemble sur un chemin désolé for flute and tuba, by Louis Sauter (France)

A somewhat gloomy piece. The flute starts playing a chromatic theme while the tuba alternates between harmonic glissandi and wistful sequences of notes. In the second part, the tuba plays a variation of the theme, while the flute accompanies it in a higher register. A short coda concludes the piece.

Louis Sauter is a French composer and (now retired) engineer. He has written over a hundred works which have been performed and recorded by professional musicians, amateurs and students worldwide, including prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall. In 2021 he won the Clouzine Award for “Best Contemporary Classical Piano Album”. More at: https://www.lsauter.com

56. Four from the Memory Jar: 4. Navidad en Santa Ana for piccolo and tuba, by Alan Terricciano (USA)

An alternate title for Four from the Memory Jar, might have been The Four Little Seasons, as each short work reflects on a fond seasonal memory from different eras and places in my life.

Spring Game was meant to capture the spirit of play with my friends as the Spring warmed my Connecticut neighborhood growing up.  Summer Night uses the Blues to evoke the many languid warm summer evenings that I remember fondly during my time in North Carolina.  Halowe'en Hayride(s)are a thing in New England, where we would ride on a tractor-pulled cart through orchards and people in costume would jump out and scare us. Navidad en Santa Ana references the wonderful Mariachi and Norteño music playing on all the jukeboxes in Southern California.  What would a Christmas Carol sound like in this style?

Alan Terricciano serves as a Professor of Dance at the University of California, Irvine. A composer and pianist, he has performed internationally and has composed extensively for choreography, the theater and the concert hall.

61. One Minute for flute and tuba, by Elpiniki Vrasmata (Greece)

My intention was to express my inner feelings through a lyric ‘contemporary’ baroque platform. Although the melodic intervals are always consonant, the harmonic ones are either consonant or dissonant on the strong beats of the metre in order to convey a rather doubtful or ambiguous sensation.

66. Sitting Alone at Mount Jingting for flute and tuba, by Man-Ching Donald Yu (Hong Kong)

The piece is inspired by the poem “Sitting along on Mount Jingting” written by Chinese poet Li Bai during the Tang Dynasty. Despite the extreme conciseness of the poem, it expresses the profound soulfulness of the poet and his meditative connection with nature. Birds and clouds symbolize the flowing phenomena of time in association with the mind and subsequently only the mountain remains, merging with the lonely awareness of the poet. Throughout the piece, the contrasted materials of two layers interact and merge together with subtle transformation. The flute part symbolizes the motional birds and clouds whereas the tuba part metaphorizes the mountain with the poet’s loneliness.

Donald Man-Ching Yu is a Hong Kong-born composer and pianist. His nearly 200 compositions range from chamber to symphonies. His music has been performed at various international festivals and events in more than 20 countries such as the 2022 Contrasts International Contemporary Music Festival, the International Review of Composers.
