The initiative for the creation of the 24 Preludes for Piano has been the composer’s personal relationship with beloved friends, students and colleagues. Recollections of their contact with each other and facets of their personalities are subtly embedded in the structure and musical features of the preludes, making them concise musical monographs or miniature musical portraits. The piano pieces were written over a long period of thirty years, from 1990 to 2019, and reveal a source of spontaneity and an impulsive, almost “automatic” writing. The compositional process is perhaps similar to the instinctive capture of a human face in a portrait by a skilled painter, with all the elements of the person’s disposition and temperament subconsciously incorporated into it. The 24 preludes vary in character, as do the characters of the people to whom they are dedicated: some are lyrical or nostalgic, some lively or aggressive, some are dramatic or contemplative, and some humorous or satirical. Their common element is that they all embody a musical core, a condensed musical gesture, from which a coherent and autonomous musical form is developed and consummated with naturalness, spontaneity and musical logic.
